We’re challenging Shell to explain its plans to expand fossil fuel projects

Shell has announced plans to grow its liquified natural gas (LNG) business by 20-30% by 2030. This goes against the recommendation by the International Energy Agency (IEA) that no new fossil fuel projects should be started if we are to reach net zero by 2050.

We're asking people to join our campaign calling on the company to explain its plans to increase fossil fuel production – despite its commitment to both net zero and the Paris climate agreement.

Shell is one of the world's leading suppliers of fossil gas which has a hugely damaging impact on the climate. In a world transitioning to green energy, the higher level of LNG production planned by Shell is environmentally dangerous and will contribute to the acceleration of the climate crisis.

We are seeing the devastating impacts of this crisis now. In 2024 we saw dangerous wildfires in California, deadly floods in Spain and intense named storms causing massive damage to communities across the UK. Responsible investors and the public know that we need to transition away from fossil fuels.

What we’re asking of Shell

Shell has previously stated its commitment to both net zero and the Paris climate agreement. The company must be more transparent about how its fossil gas expansion strategy is consistent with its own climate commitments.

We all have a role to play in helping our economies transition to a safer net zero future.

In addition to ShareAction, concerned investors are also asking for greater transparency from Shell and hope to see the oil and gas giant protect shareholder value while remaining aligned with the Paris Agreement to limit global warming.

We'll be heading to Shell’s AGM in London in May. We would love your support as we face the company directors, asking them to explain how their increase in fossil fuel production via their LNG expansion plans is consistent with their climate commitments. You can help us by signing this open letter that we’ll be handing in while we’re there.
