(Monday 1st December) Reacting to the UK government’s decision to withdraw its $1.15 billion backing for TotalEnergies’ LNG project in Mozambique, Kelly Shields, Senior Campaign Manager at ShareAction, said:
"The government's decision to pull funding from TotalEnergies' controversial LNG project in Mozambique reflects mounting reputational and legal risks. This project already stands accused of causing serious harm by failing to respect the human rights of the communities it directly affects. Plus it carries huge risks for people and planet at a time when climate impacts like floods, fires and deadly heatwaves are becoming increasingly intense and frequent.
"We urge banks that have financed Mozambique LNG in the past to end current financing and rule out future ties to the project. In light of the UK government's decision and the recent ECCHR criminal complaint against the company for its complicity in human rights violations, banks that are still funding TotalEnergies should reconsider their financing. The tide is turning against fossil fuel expansion.”
