Background

ShareAction’s work to survey, publicly rank and thus to hold accountable the biggest investors in the world on their responsible investment performance is unique. At this critical time for implementation of the Paris Agreement and SDGs there is immense value in this powerful technique, which both challenges and supports investors to accelerate action on climate change, biodiversity, public health, and human rights. Pushing major investors to be actors that drive meaningful progress on these global challenges is the core purpose of ShareAction’s investor surveys and rankings.

The Investors Surveys Manager will lead an established team of researchers to deliver our existing ambitious plans for investor surveys, and to further develop this vital area of our work. The successful candidate will foster and help manage relationships with key external parties, including an international advisory group and the philanthropic funders of this work. They will represent ShareAction publicly at events and in the media to promote survey findings. They will support colleagues across ShareAction who make use of our survey data and recommendations to drive changes in policy and practice within the global investment sector, including by regulators and financial supervisors.

The postholder will be responsible for managing the work of AODP, a previously independent NGO that was absorbed into ShareAction in 2017.

 

Job Description

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Survey Design and Delivery

  • Designing each unique survey, including drafting questions most appropriate for different sub-sets of investors (e.g. pension funds, insurers, asset managers) in different countries and regions, and on a global basis;
  • Overseeing and supporting data analysis on each survey;
  • Writing reports and briefings that present our survey findings in an accessible and fair way for different audiences. Providing editorial oversight where colleagues are writing up results and producing reports on our surveys;
  • Maintaining quality control around the survey process to ensure results are fair and robust, and designing systems to maintain quality and integrity of data output;
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders to design the next generation of investor surveys, which make visible performance on a range of ESG topics and on the governance of responsible investment within individual institutions;
  • Maintaining the timely delivery of an annual cycle of surveys and associated research; managing the pacing of workflow;
  • Maintaining a database of results and analysis that follows our data storage protocol.

Raising the profile of ShareAction’s surveys

  • Working with ShareAction’s Communications team to promote our survey findings and recommendations to different audiences and in different geographies.

Strategy and fundraising

  • Working in liaison with the Head of Fundraising, CEO and the Head of Investor Strategies on execution of a multi-year fundraising strategy for ShareAction surveys;
  • Produce reports for funders in liaison with the Fundraising Team.

Working with internal and external stakeholders and partners

  • Manage and get the best from a global advisory group for ShareAction’s investor surveys function;
  • Maintain relationships with diverse relevant stakeholders in the investment sector, in civil society, in academia, and amongst global organisations such as PRI whose input and engagement is necessary to achieve the ambitious objectives of our surveys function;
  • Support outreach to investors, regulators, and policy makers following publication of each survey to drive change and raise standards of responsible investment across the world;
  • Working with senior colleagues, establish partnerships with organisations who can help amplify our survey findings and recommendations, bring additional data into our survey process, or otherwise bring strategic benefit to the delivery of this work.

People and budget management

  • Line management of a growing surveys team (initially 2 people);
  • Management of the surveys team budget, with support from our financial controller;
  • Adopting ShareAction’s project management techniques, with support from our Process Improvement Manager;
  • Devising a programme of training for team members.

Person specification

We are looking for a passionate, determined individual, with the following experience and skills:

ESSENTIAL

  • Excellent data analysis skills;
  • Experience of designing and delivering data-driven research projects;
  • Strong written English with a record of producing compelling reports;
  • Project management skills;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Proven capacity to undertake varied tasks simultaneously to tight deadlines;
  • An excellent understanding of responsible investment and a demonstrable interest in ShareAction’s mission;
  • Familiarity with the investment sector;
  • Willingness to support colleagues delivering related ShareAction activities – such as public policy advocacy, campaigning, communications and website maintenance; and
  • Experience of managing a team, particularly on research tasks.

DESIRABLE

  • Experience of managing budgets;
  • Experience of using a CRM, especially Salesforce;
  • Experience of fundraising;
  • Public speaking experience;
  • Understanding of GDPR and how it relates to the workplace; and
  • Knowledge and experience of using Office 365 and SharePoint.

A few more details

  • Hours of work: 35 hrs per week with an expectation of some out of hours working
  • Holidays: 25 days per annum, pro rata plus working days between Christmas and New Year, plus statutory bank holidays
