Background

ShareAction is a charity and campaigning organisation working to unleash the power of the financial system to drive social progress and protect our environment. We focus on transforming the investment system, using it as a lever to generate positive social and environmental impact in the real world.

We do this by:

  • Educating and working with investors to improve their practices;
  • Influencing the policy-makers and industry regulators that can ensure the investment system serves society’s interests in the long-term;
  • Campaigning to unlock the power of investors, as shareholders in companies, to change corporate behaviour (on issues such as climate change, good work and human rights, sustainable food and public health);
  • Mobilising ordinary people, who have a stake in the investment system through their pensions and savings, to demand a change in how their money is invested;
  • Collaborating with other civil society organisations who share our vision.

Job Description

Established in 2016, the Workforce Disclosure Initiative (WDI) has an ambitious vision to transform the quantity and quality of available data on the workforce practices of the world’s largest public companies. It is built around an annual survey of companies (750 companies received the WDI questionnaire last year). The data is analysed by WDI and shared with signatory investors. WDI also facilitates engagement between investors and companies to drive disclosure and improved performance.

WDI’s ultimate purpose is to improve the lives of working people across the world, focusing on the most vulnerable in the global workforce.

As WDI transitions to receiving its income increasingly from investor signatories, it will gain greater operational independence from ShareAction. This presents an opportunity to relaunch WDI, with new energy and focus.

The job holder will play an important role in the new WDI team, contributing to and learning about research and campaigns through direct engagement with multinational companies, desk research, data management and online/offline/phone communications.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Although your role will be varied and open to some change in the activities you will undertake, below are the types of activities that you can expect to be doing:

  • Establish new relationships and develop existing ones in some of the world’s largest publicly listed companies to support them through the WDI reporting cycle, to encourage their participation in the Initiative and to advance their workforce management policies and practices (this will mainly be via phone calls);
  • Respond to incoming enquiries from companies and other stakeholders related to the WDI survey;
  • Ensure that the database is kept up to date and that the data and feedback is recorded efficiently with the learning shared across the team;
  • Play a role in delivering webinars, roundtables, and workshops that convene companies and investors to discuss workforce management;
  • Assist in developing support materials to help companies take part in the WDI, ideally with a sector lens;
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of the online reporting tool through which companies submit their data to the WDI investor signatories;
  • Assist in maintaining key WDI relationships with WDI data partners;
  • Ad hoc support to the team that may involve Excel work/analysis, letter posting and Salesforce maintenance etc (training will of course be provided).

Person specification

We are looking for a passionate, determined individual, with the following experience and skills:

ESSENTIAL

  • Keen interest in corporate sustainability themes and related internal company challenges, ideally related to the workforce;
  • Relevant experience in a situation related to this role, e.g. client relationship management (especially via the phone);
  • Persuasive communication skills (verbal and written);
  • Organised; self-directed on work initiatives; strong attention to detail;
  • Flexibility and creative problem-solving skills;
  • Confidence in using IT to manage data and communications (Outlook, PowerPoint, Salesforce, SharePoint);
  • Strong commitment to collaborative working and ShareAction’s values of accountability and transparency.

DESIRABLE

  • Additional language skills, other than fluency in English;
  • Knowledge and experience of using Salesforce as a CRM;
  • Basic knowledge of or desire to learn about coding our survey tool.
