ShareAction is a charity and campaigning organisation working to unleash the power of the financial system to drive social progress and protect our environment. We focus on transforming the investment system, using it as a lever to generate positive social and environmental impact in the real world.

We do this by:

  • Educating and working with investors to improve their practices;
  • Influencing the policy-makers and industry regulators that can ensure the investment system serves society’s interests in the long-term;
  • Campaigning to unlock the power of investors, as shareholders in companies, to change corporate behaviour (on issues such as climate change, good work and human rights, sustainable food and public health);
  • Mobilising ordinary people, who have a stake in the investment system through their pensions and savings, to demand a change in how their money is invested;
  • Collaborating with other civil society organisations who share our vision.

ShareAction builds, organises and manages five responsible investment networks: we work with individual pension savers, AGM activists, civil society organisations, charitable investors, and universities. Our Networks Team does this by providing research, events, online and offline spaces for conversation, advocacy and campaigning opportunities. We are a team of five, working as three sub-teams, focussing on individuals (pension savers and AGM activists), civil society, and asset owners (charity and university investors).

Job Description

We are looking for an investor engagement manager to support our engagement with the asset owners that comprise our Responsible Investment Network – Universities (RINU) and Charities Responsible Investment Network (CRIN). RINU is a newly-launched network supporting universities to invest their assets in alignment with their values, undertake social investment and engage with their stakeholders. CRIN has supported operational and grant-giving charities to invest responsibly since 2013.

The role involves working with our existing sub-team (Head of Networks and Networks Officer) to support the memberships of these two asset owner networks, through online and offline member meetings and communications, as well as supporting with the development and delivery of our annual work plans of events, research and advocacy. The ultimate goal of the role is to ensure that our members are supported to become confident and active responsible investors, working collaboratively within and beyond their network.

Who are we looking for?

This is an exciting role to help ShareAction grow and deliver value to our longstanding and well-established network, alongside a unique new network of universities. ShareAction and our network members see smaller asset owners (5m-1.5bn) as critical actors in the pursuit of an investment system that supports people and planet, and we are looking for somebody with the enthusiasm and drive to help make this vision a reality.

Preferably, we need someone with some experience of higher education finance, charity investment and/or the investment world, but we have experience training and supporting new staff from a wide range of backgrounds, and a willingness to learn is most essential.

We are looking for somebody who is comfortable dealing with senior organisational leaders such as charity investment directors or university/college bursars. We’re also keen to find a self-starter who feels excited by the prospect of working closely in a team to execute two annual network work plans, comprised of events, research and advocacy opportunities. This role will involve great exposure to higher education, the charity sector, and responsible investment.

Member Engagement:

  • Developing and maintaining on-going relationships with key network member contacts, generally the finance/investment leads at UK-based higher education institutions (universities and colleges) and charities (grant giving and operational);
  • Supporting teammates and liaising with the network members to develop and deliver annual work-plans, covering a range of events, research and advocacy opportunities;
  • Facilitating member access to new responsible investment projects, campaigns and advocacy opportunities;
  • Supporting Network members to improve their responsible investment policies and practice;
  • Presenting to members’ investment teams and committees on responsible investment topics.

Your work in this area will be supported both by the Networks Team and by ShareAction’s cross-team Investor Engagement staff.

Network Operations:

  • Coordinating biannual network member meetings, including bringing in exciting external speakers;
  • Arranging ad hoc events on specific campaigns and responsible investment topics to increase members’ ability to invest responsibly;
  • Communicating network initiatives and maintaining relationships with members through regular meetings, phone calls, our online forum, and email correspondence;
  • Assisting the Head of Networks with meetings with prospective members;
  • Managing the process of induction for new network members;
  • Raising the profile of CRIN/RINU at events;
  • Collaborating with other similar networks to maximise collective impact around responsible investment.

  • Developing and pursuing RINU-specific campaigns in collaboration with the members;
  • Supporting RINU members to publicise and pursue their own initiatives, within and beyond the network;
  • Supporting ShareAction’s Policy and corporate campaigning teams to facilitate network member engagement on investor letters and other initiatives.

  • Disseminating relevant research from other sources on responsible investment;
  • Supporting our Networks Officer and Head of Networks with our research programme.

Please note that this list isn’t exhaustive and the role might change slightly from time to time.

  • Demonstrable project management skills;
  • A proven experience of event management;
  • Good communication and presentation skills and confidence speaking to larger and/or senior audiences;
