Background

ShareAction is a charity and campaigning organisation working to unleash the power of the financial system to drive social progress and protect our environment. We focus on transforming the investment system, using it as a lever to generate positive social and environmental impact in the real world.

We do this by:

  • Educating and working with investors themselves to improve their practices;
  • Influencing the policy-makers and industry regulators that can ensure the investment system serves society’s interests in the long-term;
  • Campaigning to unlock the power of investors, as shareholders in companies, to change corporate behaviour (on issues such as climate change, good work and human rights, sustainable food and public health);
  • Mobilising ordinary people, who have a stake in the investment system through their pensions and savings, to demand a change in how their money is invested;
  • Collaborating with other civil society organisations who share our vision.

While the majority of our staff are London-based, we do have a presence in Brussels, and are planning to expand this in the coming years so as to strengthen our work in Europe.

Our Brussels work focuses on changing the regulatory system. We undertake research, meet with policy-makers, work with civil society, and organise events bringing different stakeholders together.

Job Description

This is a junior position that will involve delving into both the EU’s Action Plan on Financing Sustainable Growth and the wider EU agenda on sustainable finance. The ideal candidate will be inquisitive, rigorous, resilient and proactive. This role is based in Brussels and will be overseen by our EU Policy Manager; there will also be frequent contact with colleagues based in our headquarters in London. You will need to be comfortable working independently whilst reliably following procedures and policies and ensuring that colleagues are kept informed.

This six-month internship is in the form of a “Convention d’immersion professionnelle”.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The role involves the following:

  • Monitor EU policy developments related to ShareAction’s strategic priorities;
  • Support the preparation of policy briefings and positions, amendments and official consultations;
  • Support wider ShareAction teams with policy-related input as needed;
  • Research topics of interest to support our policy work;
  • Provide our European Responsible Investment Network (ERIN) and other colleagues and partners with updates and information related to EU Policy;
  • Engage with policymakers, civil society, trade unions and the investment industry in order to disseminate and present our positions;
  • Attend events and conferences as needed.

Please note that this list is not exhaustive and you may be required to perform different tasks from time to time.

Person specification

We are looking for a passionate, determined individual, with the following experience and skills:

ESSENTIAL

  • Good knowledge of the EU’s legislative processes;
  • Basic familiarity with financial markets and sustainability, or demonstrable ability to grasp new areas of knowledge;
  • Impeccable verbal and written skills in English, with additional European languages being an advantage;
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

DESIRABLE

  • Experience working within the European Institutions, i.e. through a Blue Book or Schuman Traineeship Scheme, would be a strong advantage;
  • Knowledge of financial regulation;
  • Experience of working with Microsoft Office 365, particularly SharePoint;
  • Experience of working with CRM systems, ideally Salesforce;
  • Basic knowledge of data protection regulations / GDPR.

ShareAction values and respects all differences in people (see and unseen). One of the ways we do this is by actively encouraging staff to work in ways that best suit their needs and our flexible working policy outlines many of the options available- such as part-time and term-time working, job sharing, home working and working compressed hours. Please talk to us at the interview about the flexibility you need. We can’t promise to give you exactly what you want, but we do promise not to judge you for asking.

Hours of work: 35 hrs per week

How to apply

Please send an up to date CV and cover letter to recruitment@shareaction.org by Monday 4 November 2019 at 9am GMT. Please ensure that your cover letter is no more than one side of A4 and that you address all of the criteria in the person specification by giving details of work experience (paid or voluntary) skill and achievements relevant to this post and any other information to support your application.

We welcome applications from all sections of the community.

A bit more about us

ShareAction is a charity which promotes responsible investment by pension funds and other institutional investors. We believe that investment can be a force for good, serving savers and communities, and protecting our environment for the long term. We campaign on specific environmental and social issues that the investment industry has the power to influence, like climate change and workers’ rights. We advocate for policy changes required to enable responsible investment to thrive. We undertake research and rankings to drive up best practice among pension funds and asset managers. And we work with savers to help them push their pension schemes towards more responsible behaviour and sustainable investment practices.
